Because the car not driving fine is the last symptom, not the first. Your Traffic Sign Assist and Distronic Plus read speed limits from the map, not the cameras - a stale map sets the wrong limit and your car slows (or holds) accordingly. Routing is the same story: new bypasses and tunnels your car doesn't know about turn every commute into last decade's directions. You don't notice. The fuel bill does.
Two reasons. First, phone nav dies exactly where you need it - tunnels, mountain passes, border regions, anywhere cell service drops. Mercedes navigation is offline-first and built for that. Second, your phone doesn't feed speed limits to Traffic Sign Assist or Distronic Plus - the built-in map does. CarPlay is great on top of an updated Mercedes map, but it can't replace it.
