Mercedes Japan to Europe Conversion

Convert a Japanese-market Mercedes head unit to the European variant for EU or UK maps. NTG5s2 and NTG6 equipment, what stays Japanese, and remote help. Send your VIN first.

A Mercedes built for Japan keeps a Japanese head unit variant after import. Switching the menu to English doesn't change it, and European maps can refuse to install until the variant changes. This guide covers that conversion for cars now in Europe or the UK.

Check your head unit

Head unitWhat you needRemote help
NTG5s2 (HU5)ENET cable, Windows laptop with diagnostic software, USB stick, and a battery support chargerWe help remotely on your laptop. The USB steps happen at the car.
NTG6 (HU6)ENET cable and a programmer such as VVDI. The head unit comes out of the car.We check your setup and reads. The programmer work is done on the bench by you or a workshop.
NTG5s1, NTG5.5, NTG7, Gen20xContact us firstDepends on the unit

Examples our NTG5s2 tool already handles: Japanese C-Class W205 units with a single-DVD COMAND, and some S-Class W222 units with a DVD changer. Other variants are checked per unit.

Not sure which head unit you have? Car Lookup reads your data card and reports the NTG version and the market the car was built for. The build year alone doesn't tell NTG5s1 from NTG5s2. Or send us the VIN.

What the conversion does

  • NTG5s2. The unit moves to the European variant and gets European head unit software. Writing that software takes time, so the car needs stable power for the whole job.
  • NTG6. The unit moves to the European variant of the same hardware level. If your unit has no European counterpart, we tell you before you pay.

After that, European maps install the normal way. You need the map data and a map activation code for your VIN and the Europe region.

What stays as it was

  • Speed and temperature units. Japanese cars already show km/h and °C.
  • The instrument cluster language. It's a separate module. Where the cluster supports it, we code it separately.
  • Lighting. Japan drives on the left, like the UK. For mainland Europe, headlight setup is an inspection matter, not part of the head unit job.

Driving in the UK

UK speedometers need mph. That's cluster coding, not the head unit conversion. Tell us the destination is the UK and we'll check the cluster from the VIN.

FAQ

I already changed the language. Why won't European maps install?

Language is a setting. The map region follows the head unit variant, which stays Japanese until it's converted.

Which programmer do I need for NTG6?

A programmer that can reliably read and write the head unit's memory, such as VVDI. Tell us what you have before you start and we'll confirm it's suitable.

Can I pay for one car instead of buying a workshop tool?

Yes. Email the VIN for a one-car job. Workshops that convert often can use the Professional region conversion tools.
